Kids Jiu-Jitsu in Pleasanton — Sprouts and Buds
I’m a dad as well as an instructor, and I built youth class the way I would want it for my own kids: coordination, safe contact, and grappling games that still build real skill — not a dump of adult moves onto small people. We teach children at 7034 Commerce Circle, Suite F, Pleasanton, CA 94588. Two academy classes, two age bands, one building.
The two academy classes
BJJ Sprouts (ages 5–7). Play with a point. Movement drills, grappling games, supervised light sparring. The aim is a first love of jiu-jitsu and a sense of achievement that is earned, not staged.
BJJ Buds (ages 8–13). Same art, more rigor. Principles, techniques, movement patterns, and simple strategy. Drills, games, and supervised sparring for fun, self-defense, and — if a child wants it later — competition. We do not require a child to compete.
On the current schedule, both classes run after school on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (gi). Confirm times on that page before you come; Sunday we are closed.
Teens who have outgrown Buds move toward Fundamentals with adults. Parents who want to train: same building, evening Fundamentals. Home gym: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Pleasanton.
Rec and LPC Community Education — how some kids find us
Some families first meet this gym through Pleasanton Recreation or Las Positas College Community Education. Those are real entry paths. They are not academy membership.
Academy Sprouts and Buds are the GRA week on our schedule. To join that, book a free trial or contact us. LPC Community Education has listed youth BJJ courses that meet at the academy (their catalog has used “Sprouts” for more than one age band). We keep our own names here: Sprouts 5–7, Buds 8–13. If your child started through rec or ComEd and wants the academy calendar, say so when you trial.
What parents usually want to know
Academy youth starts at 5. That’s Sprouts. Buds is 8–13. Younger than 5 is not a class we list.
Kids classes on the current grid are gi days. If you already have a gi, wear it. If not, fitted athletic clothes without zippers or pockets that catch. Don’t buy a closet of gear before you trial.
Sprouts uses supervised light sparring. Buds uses supervised sparring. Youth class is still jiu-jitsu — we just keep the contact honest for the age in the room.
I teach the classes. I’m a BJJ black belt, I still teach chemistry at Las Positas College, and I founded GRA in 2024. We don’t just teach techniques. We teach why they work, scaled to a child’s body: base, leverage, where the weight actually is. More of that story is on About.
